Rev. Mike Hogg (pronounced Hoag) came to us over five years ago after serving 14 years as a pastor in the heart of Now Orleans. He and his wife are not strangers to California, having served on staff/faculty of Biola University, been involved in the ministry of First Presbyterian of Hollywood while studying at Fuller Seminary and traveling frequently on their bicycles up and down the Pacific Coast Highway.
Mike and Christina have five grown children, two grandchildren and have been blessed to come to know many others in their years of ministry that they consider “family”. They both have a passion to see people discover the truth of “abundant life” through salvation and the indwelling Presence of the Risen Christ.
Rick was born near Houston in 1950. He grew up in the Bay Area, graduated from High School in 1968. He grew up in a non-church home and went to University as a non-believer. He became involved with a Christian
group called Inter Varsity, becoming a Christian in the Fall of 1969. He met and later married his college sweetheart that he encountered in a Bible study in his dorm. He became one of the leaders of Inter Varsity that grew from 15 to 400 in four years. He went on to work for Inter Varsity for ten years as Campus Minister.
Rick graduated in Chemistry from Chico, married Valerie and moved to Sacramento to a struggling IV group at Sac State. That group grew from 5 to 250 in six years. In his last three years with IV Rick became involved with a Wesleyan church that licensed and later ordained him as a minster. Rick graduated Fuller Seminary in 1983. In the Fall 1983 Rick and Val were sent to start a new church in Rocklin, Ca. After four years and knocking on 700 doors the church was running about 125 per Sunday. During their five years in Rocklin they adopted their two girls Kaidi and Becky. Rick and Val completed their five year church planting commitment and decided to take a break from full time ministry to raise their girls.
Moving to Hollister in 1988 Rick built houses and started a Real Estate company. Valerie and Rick’s mother started a daycare/pre-school which grew to 140 children. In the spring of 1989 Rick was recruited to lead a bible study for couples. That led to Rick being asked to fill the pulpit for eight months starting later that year. Rick was part of the group that brought Rev. Rodriguez. After David came he helped Rick to obtain credentials as a Presbyterian minister. For the last 27 years Rick has served here in Hollister. He has three times been the transition pastor until the next pastor could come. Rick is now a Presbytery leader in ECO’s Bluewater Presbytery. He has had the privilege seeing dear leaders love our church, their children grown and decades of those leaders boldly reach, equip and love our community.
